VATESOL conference

Saturday, October 2, 2010
This morning the conference started at 8 a.m. There were several interesting proposals and I made up my mind to choose  the following:
Reading in the ESL Classroom: Research and Practice, Tried and true technology, Creative ways to use  discussion boards, Teaching and Assessing Positive and Negative emotions with young Learners and Creative ways to Enhance Students´ speaking Skills. All the choices were interesting, particularly the ones related to the use of technological devices to enhance teaching practice. To  the end of the conference I was very fortunate to win some books in a raffle.  At 5 p.m. we made our way to Fredericksburg. There, we  had a coffee at a German pub by the station and took  the Amtrak back to Washington DC. On the train we came across one of the speakers at the conference, an Ecuadorian who spoke about his investigation on  the use of cognates to learn English. We also discussed the situation in his country where there have recently been a political upheaval.
